Most people arrive in this part of Lower Parel for one restaurant inside a mill compound and leave without seeing the rest of it. The two compounds, Kamala Mills and Phoenix Mills, sit a few minutes apart off Senapati Bapat Marg, and between them they hold the densest concentration of eating and shopping in the neighbourhood. What this guide adds is everything on the outer lanes: the chai counters, chemists, stationery shops and repair counters that the offices inside actually run on, and which almost never appear on a food app.

Lunch is the hour that defines the area. From about one to three the lanes fill with office crowds and every counter runs at full speed, from sit down restaurants inside the compounds to the stalls plating vada pav on the pavement outside. Come on a Sunday and the same stretch is close to empty, which is the best time to walk it if you want to talk to owners rather than queue behind them.
